Are You Encouraging
Your Child in Math?
Some children seem to be defeated by math before they ever learn it. Others thrive on the challenge. Here's a quiz to see whether you're doing everything you can to help your child succeed in math.
Give yourself five points for something you usually do, zero points for something you never do—or any score in between you think you deserve.
___1. |
I talk with my child about how I use math every day—on the job and in running a household. |
___2. |
We play games that use math skills (for example, "21" or Monopoly®). |
___3. |
I assure my child that anyone can learn math—all it takes is regular practice. |
___4. |
We make a game out of estimating—how many potatoes in 10 pounds, how many beans in the bowl, how many miles from our house to school. |
___5. |
If math wasn't my favorite subject, I avoid saying things like, "I don't blame you for hating math. I did, too." |
How did you score?
Above 20 means you're doing everything you can to raise a math whiz. Fifteen to 19 is average. Below 15? Try using some of the ideas in the quiz to send positive messages about math to your child
